Underfloor cooling on the coast: humidity and limits to understand

A water-based floor system can form part of a cooling solution, but having pipes in the floor is not enough. Indoor humidity and controls are decisive when assessing whether this option suits the home.

Cooling requires a review of the whole installation

In heating mode, the floor supplies heat to the room. For cooling, a suitably prepared installation circulates water at a lower temperature than the surrounding air. The equipment producing it, the distribution system and the controls must all support this operation. Electric underfloor heating cannot become a cooling system by changing the thermostat.

Nor should an existing water-based floor automatically be considered ready. The heat source, materials and system conditions need identifying. If you are renovating, raise summer use from the outset: this allows flooring, controls and any supplementary equipment to be assessed before the building work is completed.

Humidity creates a real limitation

When a surface becomes sufficiently cool relative to the humid air around it, condensation can appear. The dew point describes that condition and changes with the indoor environment. There is therefore no water temperature that can be recommended as safe for every home on every summer day.

In a home near the sea, it is useful to understand ventilation habits, when doors and windows are left open and how indoor humidity varies. A coastal location warrants attention to these conditions, but does not justify approving or rejecting the system without assessing the property. The particular spaces to be cooled matter.

Measurement and limits are part of the design

Some radiant controls use humidity sensors to limit or stop cooling when conditions require it. Depending on the solution, they may also coordinate other equipment. These functions need suitable components and correct configuration; they should not be assumed to be included simply because the thermostat has a modern screen or mobile connectivity.

Protection may temporarily stop a zone from cooling. This does not necessarily mean the equipment has developed a fault. At handover, the user should be told what the controller displays, how a limitation is indicated and when to seek advice. Overriding protection to obtain more cooling is not a comfort solution.

Discuss humidity and the intended use as well

A cooling surface does not, by itself, replace an assessment of indoor humidity. Dehumidification or another heating and cooling solution may need considering, particularly if the desired comfort cannot be achieved with the floor operating within its limits. That decision depends on the project, rather than floor area alone.

Describe what you expect when arriving home, how many people occupy it and which rooms receive the most sun. If you need rapid changes or very specific conditions, include this in the discussion. Comparing solutions by how well they serve your needs is more useful than choosing solely to keep equipment off the walls.

Questions to answer before placing an order

A clear proposal identifies how condensation risk is controlled and what happens when the system reaches its limits. Red Málaga can assess the integration of underfloor heating, an air source heat pump and controls, taking the conditions of each home into account.

  • Do the heat source and complete floor system support cooling mode?
  • Which conditions will be measured, and where will the sensors be placed?
  • Does humidity need managing with additional equipment?
  • How will limitations and alerts be explained to the user?

More common questions

Can I activate cooling mode if it appears on the controller?

First confirm that the installation is prepared and configured for it. A function appearing in a menu does not prove that all the necessary components and protective measures are installed.
