Underfloor heating thermostats: which features will you use?

The best controls suit the installation and make sense to the people living in the home. Before comparing screens and apps, decide which adjustments you need to make and where you want to make them from.

Relate features to everyday situations

A manual control can provide a simple way to change a setpoint. Scheduling lets you organise periods of use, while an app may allow remote changes where the system supports them. These are different functions: mobile connectivity alone does not explain how each room is controlled.

Make a short list of real situations. For example, adjusting a bedroom without changing the living room, preparing the home before you arrive, or maintaining a weekly schedule without using the controller every day. This list helps you choose useful features and avoid paying for options you may not be able to use.

Compatibility comes before appearance

A thermostat does not work in isolation. It may communicate with a central unit, operate particular installation components or use specific sensors. A replacement must account for these relationships. Two similar-looking devices can use different connections and communication methods, so they should not be treated as interchangeable without checking.

Photograph the current controller and the identification labels on accessible equipment, without dismantling anything. If you have documentation, keep the model details and diagrams. This helps assess whether replacing a control is enough or whether the improvement needs other components. For new installations, ask for all the controls to be specified as a complete system.

Consider how it will work without a connection

With connected systems, distinguish local operation from remote access. Ask which functions remain available through the controllers in the home and which depend on a connection or external service. The answer must relate to the proposed product, because they do not all work in the same way.

Managing access matters too. Decide who will hold the main account and how other people will be authorised. If the home changes owner or occupants, transfer of control needs considering. Keep the documentation and use the manufacturer’s access options, avoiding dependence on one person to change a schedule.

Check what each sensor contributes

Room temperature, floor temperature and humidity are different variables. Some controls support more than one, but they need the appropriate sensors and settings for the system. If cooling is proposed, ask specifically how its limits are managed; a cooling symbol in the menu is not enough.

Adaptive functions also need explaining. An early start may aim to bring the room to the target temperature at the scheduled time, rather than begin heating at that moment. If this option exists, ask how it behaves so normal anticipation is not mistaken for heating outside the schedule.

Try everyday operation at handover

The demonstration should use the names and schedules of your home. Red Málaga can assess controls alongside underfloor heating and its integration with an air source heat pump. The choice becomes specific once the equipment and intended use are known.

  • Change a setpoint and return to the normal programme.
  • Set a temporary absence without deleting all the schedules.
  • Identify an alert and find its explanation in the manual.
  • Check which functions are available on each controller and in the app.

Keep a reference configuration

After the initial adjustments, save the agreed schedules and note what each zone does. This reference lets you try changes in an organised way. If unexpected behaviour appears, you can explain what changed and restore familiar operation, without using trial and error on settings reserved for the installer.
