Underfloor heating in a renovation: assessing the available floor height

The advertised height of a panel does not necessarily equal the increase in finished floor level. During a renovation, every layer and junction needs assessing before you choose a system.

Measure from the subfloor to the final finish

When a system is described as low profile, the stated dimension may refer to one component or a particular floor build-up. For your home, the relevant measurement is different: the finished floor level compared with what is there now. This includes subfloor preparation, the heating system, any layers it requires and your chosen finish.

Manufacturers offer low-profile solutions and dry systems for refurbishment. Their availability broadens the options, but does not prove that every home can accommodate one without other work. Ask for a section drawing of the proposed floor and a list of its layers. This is a simple way to see what the stated height includes and what remains undefined.

Check the points that constrain the renovation

A measurement in the middle of the living room does not describe the whole home. Entrance doors, internal doorways, balcony doors, the foot of stairs and junctions with areas retaining their flooring all need checking. If the project includes a level-access shower, its design also needs coordinating with the overall renovation.

Walk through the property with the plan and mark the features you do not want to change. One door may allow adjustment while another presents a different difficulty. Before accepting a solution, ask how each transition will be finished and who will carry out that work. Avoiding an unexpected change in level depends on settling these details before buying materials.

The condition of the subfloor can change the decision

Not every existing floor can serve as a direct base. Stability, flatness and the condition of the substrate need assessing for the proposed system. Loose tiles, damaged areas or unknown layers should be investigated while planning the renovation, rather than hidden behind a quotation based only on floor area.

Ask which checks will be carried out and what preparation work is included. It is also useful to know how differences between rooms will be addressed. One quotation may assume that a sound base will remain, while another allows for its removal; without that clarification, their prices and timescales do not describe the same job.

Distinguish dry installation from screeded solutions

Some radiant systems use wet layers, while others use a dry construction with specific components. The choice affects the sequence of work, the conditions for laying the flooring and coordination between trades. Construction details for one product family should not simply be applied to another.

The schedule should include the stages required by the chosen solution, including the times specified by the manufacturers of the materials used. An advertised installation date does not replace the complete programme for your renovation. Ask for installation, readiness for flooring and commissioning to be distinguished, particularly if you will continue living in the house.

What to prepare before requesting a proposal

Gather photographs of important junctions and, if available, plans or records of previous renovations. Red Málaga can assess underfloor heating within the scope of your installations and coordinate the constraints that need resolving alongside the building work.

  • Identify which rooms will have their flooring removed and which will retain it.
  • Provide data sheets for the planned finishes and mark changes of material.
  • Ask for the total height of the finished solution, rather than just the panel or pipe height.
  • Record the work required at doors, thresholds and other junctions, and who is responsible for it.

More common questions

Does a low-profile system always avoid lifting the existing floor?

No. It may allow the floor to remain under certain conditions, but the decision depends on the subfloor, the approved system build-up and the levels available in the property.
